Mid Century Paul Evans Brutalist Style Walnut Lowboy Dresser
This striking Brutalist walnut dresser, made in Canada in 1970s and attributed to the style of Paul Evans, is a substantial and highly sculptural statement piece. Crafted from richly figured walnut, its bold geometric design showcases the dramatic aesthetic that defined Brutalist furniture of the era.
The dresser features nine drawers in total, with three wider central drawers flanked by three drawers on each side. The cabinet doors are adorned with an intricate mosaic of solid walnut cubes, creating a deeply textured relief pattern that produces a beautiful play of light and shadow while highlighting the natural grain of the wood.
Built to an exceptional standard, the side drawers are constructed from solid wood with dovetail joinery. The piece is remarkably heavy and solid, reflecting the quality craftsmanship of the period.
Condition: the top, sides, base, and back sides of the cabinet doors have been professionally refinished and sealed with multiple coats of Danish oil, enhancing the walnut’s warmth and character. To provide additional structural support, a custom solid wood base has been added above the original plinth, ensuring long-term durability. Minor wear consistent with age and past use is expected.
With its sculptural presence, rich walnut tones, and architectural form, this impressive dresser works gorgeously as a bedroom dresser, living room or dining room credenza, or statement storage piece, capturing the bold spirit of 1970s Brutalist design.
